WASHINGTON - Drivers on northbound Interstate 270 hopped out of their cars to grab money after the door of a GardaWorld armored truck malfunctioned and a bag of cash fell out Friday morning, Maryland State Police say.

It happened after 8 a.m. Friday near Urbana, Maryland, forcing northbound I- 270 near Md. 80 to close for about 20 minutes.

Police say the preliminary investigation indicates a door lock malfunctioned, causing the armored car door to open. The bag of cash fell into the fast lane.

"There was no crash. Cash was strewn across the interstate, but was quickly picked up by all the motorists who immediately stopped," writes Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley in an email to WTOP.

The driver of the security truck moved to the shoulder, and he told police when he did, a number of drivers stopped on the highway and picked up the money. When a fire department officials go on the scene, all of the drivers picking up money left.

Police say an unknown amount of money was lost. GardaWorld security is assessing the losses.

Troopers, assisted by K9 dogs, managed to recover just over $200.

"Motorists who picked up the cash are reminded it is not their money," says a news release from the police.

Police are asking people who grabbed the cash on the highway to turn it into the Frederick Barrack of the Maryland State Police.

If the investigation uncovers the identities of those who took the money on the highway, the people involved could face theft charges, police say.

Second story says there was a crash. How hard is it to report the news these days?

URBANA, Md. (AP) -- Drivers scrambled to grab money flying around Interstate 270 in Frederick County after an armored truck and a dump truck collided. The two trucks hit each other just before 8 a.m. Friday on northbound Interstate 270 at Route 80, near Urbana. Maryland State Police say the crash sent cash flying from the armored truck, which had drivers stopping to try to scoop some up for themselves. Troopers closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 270 between Route 80 and Route 120 to try to recover the money. No injuries were reported.

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

Garda must have some awesome insurance because they loose money more than once a year. They lost 20k earlier this year when the guard left the money on top of the truck as they left a casino. The money was never found lol

They dont use those bags anymore except for in the movies. They've gone to plastic bags

Most likely they had bags stored by the door and when it didn't latch all the way (it reportedly broke) out came the the bags. Since it was 8am when the accident happened it was most likely orders to be delivered for the day
