Depends on how you come across the engine and how many out of the box swap parts you buy.

Crate motor-$6200
Control pack-$1500
K member-$300-$700
Accessory kit-$600 (depending on if you want to keep a/c, p/s, which alternator you use)
Accelerator pedal bracket-$100
Transmission? The stock trans won't hold up long. T-56, 4R70W, etc?

You'll also have money in exhaust work, speedometer adapter, fuel system since you'll need to go to a return style, tune and all the other little nick-nacks that will add up along the way.

I think for under 10K, you could do it up NICE.

I know this is no longer a mustang forum, but let's talk 03-04 Cobras anyway. I have been wanting one for a few years, but I think I can get one when I get my bonus this year (Dec 1st). Other than price, any good reason to not get one? I personally like this body style better than the 05+ style, until the '15+ style, but I can't afford a $40k toy. I'm looking at a few now to see what is out there, and it seems I can get one with some mods, good condition, and under 50k miles for right at $21k.

Thoughts? Warning signs to look for? Where is Whiteboy's used-car-o-rama?

I bought one with a hurt motor for $14K with 40k miles. I've got a new engine and all the supporting mods, just need to get off my fatass and get it running. Should be a solid 400+RW when I'm done.

Kinda. Boss block 5.0, blower cams, 10.7:1, 3.4 Whipple with crusher, ID1300's, and 1-7/8 LT's going to 3" all the way out. Should be a solid 400+RW.
