Me in Antarctica in November (summer). If I remember right it was around -30F and with the wind chill somewhere around -50F.

That was a couple of years ago (Oct 07 - Feb 08). I was a heavy equipment mechanic (dozers, forklifts, and other stuff) in support of the National Science Foundation. Quite a few girls were there unlike here in Afghanistan (where I am now).

Down there... and I wouldn't say that. I only knew one girl that was all natural (she was a fellow mechanic). The rest were college girls there helping some professor do research on something (fish that don't freeze, penguins, pollution, space, etc). There were, however, a LOT of tree hugger hippies with long hair. I was one of the few guys that had short hair.

The atmosphere is pretty awesome, but you don't really deal with the scientists too much. If my understanding is right... universities receive grants from the NSF to do a specific type of research and time is very limited so they work their asses off and are usually out in the field.

However, there are a lot of parties down there (1 smoking bar, 1 non-smoking bar, and wine/coffee shop/bar) and the place goes crazy when there is a major holiday (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, etc.) and every weekend there is always something going on. Best contract I have ever been on. I was only down there 6 months (summer contract) but whenever i go back I want to do a winter.

12 pesos a day, it's terrible. On the plus side, all the fresh seafood you can catch/eat tho!

As a heavy equipment mechanic (one of the higher paying jobs) I made $950 a week pre-deductions or $1,200 every two weeks take home. You are taxed down there like you are in the states because they consider it part of the US due to the 19?? Antarctic Treaty.

The first two months there is nothing fresh. There is a week in October where they fly the initial people in to get the place up and running (called Win Fly) and after the flights leave there are no more flights for another two months. Powdered milk, tofu, etc. They actually hire chefs and they do a good job with what they have, but you can only do so much. Once summer starts and they get regular flights in the food gets better.

I don't know why, but I'm surprised to see infrastructure down there. Pay seems shitty, but I guess the experience makes up for it. I'd get a shirt that said 'ever wanna blow a guy from Antarctica? Now's your chance!'

I say post up a thread, I'm fascinated to see more.
