Fuck him. He is fucking you. If you feel he is missing callout on purpose and given the timing around Christmas, run him right the fuck over with that bus. You can only turn so many cheeks before you need to look out for yourself. Burn him.
If you get stuck for another month to cover his rotation, I would spend every free minute setting it up for him to never come back. If you are in good with the crew get specific references to him not doing his job. Might even go so far to get it in writing from them if they would be willing.
Burn him.

You're the FNG, and the snitch... I say good luck to you, sir. I thought you liked being on boats?

Well, guess what? Turns out, he doesn't know shit about electronics, Programmable Logic Controllers, or complex hydraulic control systems. I understand all that shit, just had to learn my way around a 3 story tall crane with massive amounts of all that stuff.
He can put heavy equipment together as part of a team effort when several are out there, and try to make himself look real smart by taking credit for shit that other people do.
Meanwhile, I have studied, learned, and fixed a whole bunch of problems on this crane, and have earned the respect of the entire crew on this boat. I was under an immense amount of pressure quite a few times. In fact, I am right now, too. I need to fix one more thing before I get off the boat, but it's pouring down rain and lightning...
That'll make it 10 huge fucking issues that I've put to rest. Him? A big fat 0. I really wouldn't care except for the fact that he's been getting away with it for so long and throws people under the bus constantly, including me - only problem is, I've kept quiet and kept figuring shit out.
I always do, and I always wind up top fucking dog, that's just the way I am.

Oddly enough this guy is missing the boat right around christmas...oh the timing
Doesn't matter where we are, the choppers will come, either from Galveston, or several places in LA.
However, if the boat is at the dock and the Offshore Manager and Captain order crew change at the dock, then someone misses it and they have to send a chopper for just that person, fingers start pointing as to who is going to pay for the flight.
I answer to the Captain. We are still going to be at the dock tomorrow so it's not a huge deal for them. But if my relief knew we were going to still be here Wednesday, he would try and find a way to show up then.
He is a habitual line stepper.

The rule is you need to be ready 3 days before or 3 days after, and be able to react in 12 hours to whatever the plan is.
He made contact and will be here tomorrow. I understand a family issue, we came into dock back in May and as soon as I got cell service I had 3 day old texts saying my grandma was on her deathbed. So I got off, and came back when I was done with family stuff.
At that time, we both happen to be riding at the same time, so he stayed on.
The dude is just a prima donna and trys to play by his own rules.

Back at Siemens I was always a team lead and in charge of something or another and if someone didn't pull their weight, I ran them off.
Out here at my job myself and another guy are the on board technicians for the crane on the vessel. Without this crane, it's just a work boat. With it, it is a money making machine and it is worth it to my client and the client's client to have us on here round the clock. Me for a month, him for a month.
I'm the new guy, he's the 6 year guy. I hear so much negative shit while I am out here, from the crew, about him, it's unbelievable. I blow it off as hearsay and do not bad rap him.
Now it's time for crew change and I'm getting dicked around because he's got some issue or another and trying to make it blah blah blah... but if this boat leaves tomorrow with me on it, I am going to blow a fucking gasket.
As it stands I have already spoken to my boss today about the hearsay, and about the crew change, etc.
Bottom line, you do your job out here, and you make crew change.
So anyway, my boss got a little insight as to what goes on when he's here and is going to do a little talking with the client.
Anything I said to her, I will say to his face if I need to. I try like hell not to burn field guys that I may have to work with again, but fuck. I've heard enough. This can't go on.
I know it sucks, but thats why those jobs pay well... they require more than average skill and most aspects of them suck.
