Is it really this hard to find a tailgate?

I've been looking since I got my truck to find a tailgate for my 95 F350 and what I've found is that it's like trying to find unicorn balls. Oh people have seen one once and have one in their garage that they'll let go for $800 when they get around to digging it out but damn. How hard is it to find one of these? I've called 3 wrecking yards and been searching Craigslist. Finding the steering column has been easier.

It's hit or miss, mostly miss unless you want to drive to south dallas to rummage through some ones back yard.

I bought my truck without a tailgate but found a structurally dented one locally for $20. For a white 99-06 silverado tailgate would cost me $250 and a trip down to mansfeld (a saturday afternoon) so I feel your pain. But if anyone has one here on the board let me know

Considering the rate tailgates are stolen at, I'm not surprised. Just wait til you do find one. My father had his stolen, $1500 to replace.

Mine has fork lift damage and I'm not planning to replace because it would get stolen.

Shipping on that thing would be pricey. The last I remember, my uncles 1993 tailgate is a heavy sumbitch.

Oh yea, price on shipping is nothing to ignore, but saying you "can't find" one was a little strange. I couldn't imagine that being such a rare part that there was also an internet shortage.

You're looking at about $150 for shipping plus the cost of the tailgate itself which is between 170 for one without the hardware to 250 with the hardware. And that's on eBay and PartsGeek.

There may be a better lock out there. I didn't do much looking, honestly. A friend of mine posted a link on facebook after someone had theirs stolen. I picked up several for myself and family members. I'm sure like with anything else, they can all be defeated. I just wanted enough of a deterrent to make them move on to the next truck on the street.

Since then, I've added a Bakflip G2 tonneau cover, keep the mfr's tailgate lock locked, and still have the master lock on the hinge.
