Ecoboost all the way. Chevy is the lowest hp full size truck on the market. And I am a chevy guy too

Yeah, the Ecoboost is a good engine, but it's not dramatically, if any better than the 5.3 Ecotec V8. It has 5 more horsepower and some more torque, but the 5.3 gets better real world gas mileage under most conditions and I'd trust the 250k mile durability to a small block V8 versus a turbocharged V6.

Then, you have the GM 6.2 when AAG mentions above. It's a beast of an engine strapped to an 8-speed automatic. It's definitely the overall best and most powerful half-ton engine on the market, hands down. My Dad has a '15 Sierra Denali with the 6.2/8-speed. The smoothness and quiet (almost too quiet) power and torque is very impressive.

Somehow my right foot doesn't agree. The 365 HP Ecoboost or the 385 HP 5.0 V-8. I drove them both.

The Ecoboost really guzzels gas when you step on it. I guess you can get the Eco or the Boost but you can't get both. The V-8 weighs 50 lbs less and costs only $400 less than the V-6 so the price difference is negligible.

The V-8 truck is a lot simpler under the hood and would seem to have less to go wrong (that V-6 is a tangle of hoses and pipes and coolers and wires and turbos). I keep my trucks for a long time and I believe the V-8 would have a better chance of going 200,000+ trouble free miles than the Twin Turbo V-6. But perhaps I'm wrong here.

5 years from now, how will the eco turbos be doing? will they be spinning fine or losing it? some will be ok, others not. i don't want that problem myself. why is it worth it?

Bottom line ---- V8 if you intend to keep the truck for a long time. That was the deciding factor for me.

I'm not arguing that the v8 is the better and simpler vehicle to have long term. But the only way a 5.0 is outrunning a 3.5 ecoboost is if it's in the regular cab model (MAYBE the ext cab). Those ecoboost trucks are nasty off the line due to peak torque being at 2500 rpm.

Oh and this one has the 5.0 motor. I drove the turbo sixes (eco-boost) and the 5.0 has way more low end torque.

I've always been partial to Ford but lately I'm really liking the new GM trucks. If I were buying new today I'd have to test both but initially I'd be leaning towards GM.

Ecoboost have proven they can go high mileage without issue... And those are the first gen ecoboost trucks of 2011 with hundreds of thousands of miles. I think further ecoboost development will only improve the drivetrain.

I agree with most... Drove both as much as you can and pick one. You'll be happy either way. Personally I think the 16 GMC looks the best

5.3 direct injection has yet to prove itself for the long term like non direct injection 5.3. Lot's of concerns out there from people with carbon but I really haven't seen anything negative yet.
