The kids aren't being taught well. That's part of the big problem. We pay the most in the world for an education, and it's the lowest quality education out there. Govt needs to let schools go, and let the private sector take over. Much more efficient.

    Such as?

And I am curious how any of us have any modicum of success with the piss poor education we all got.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on why they should not have to pay for education through taxes but nobody seems to be stepping up to figure out how to do it better
    .
    Eh hm.

Give me my property tax money and I'll put it to better use giving it to a private school for the child I may or may not have.

You are missing the point. Rich districts, like Allen, Prosper, and Frisco would lose that $65 million anyways. So, if you were in their shoes, would you rather lose the money to some remote poor district, or would you rather "lose" it on a state of the art stadium? Hell, I don't blame them. I'd do the same thing. I do have a problem that the loophole exists though.

No, they would have gotten taught privately or at home and would have been smarter for it.

Don't worry about the fact the you work hard for what you have/earn, just suck it up and keep paying more taxes for the good of the State. Here's an idea, maybe the State of Texas could actually try being more frugal in it's spending. Wow, what a concept.
Paying for illegals education and medical is going to end up breaking us like it did Kalifornia.

It is my understanding that the way the Robin Hood plan works is that school districts that rake in tons of money from property taxes, Southlake for example, have to send excess amounts (not sure how that is calculated) to the state for redistribution. Capital projects are excluded from that calculation as to what is excessive. So when you see giant stadiums and nice new buildings, in the eyes of the school district, that represents money that would have been sent to Austin to educate illegal aliens in South Texas.
Ah, yes. The ever present and oft abused loophole.

I think some of you guys need to re-read the title: Scary stuff-parents, you need to be paying attention

While of course Leah (and I) are concerned about her potential job loss, the bigger issue here is how it will impact your kids. What do you think is going to happen to the already sucky system when they will be taking away more teachers and programs that are out there.

Schools / Districts and legislators aren't re-working anything, they are just looking at what they can cut.

What Leah and the UEA is saying here is that this will certainly be a detriment to the children and agree that the legislators and school boards need to find a way to correct the problem. Some people in here said that throwing more money at the district is a bandaid but IMO CUTTING the money is the bandaid. School budgets should not be cut, they should be tasked with doing more with what they have.

I also cringe everytime I hear someone say "I have to pay for schools and I don't even have kids!" That may be true but IMO you are thinking about it wrong. Those of YOU who got a public education are just paying back what you consumed.
