That is probably what I will do.Originally posted by Chili View PostI've never seen or heard of those before, very interesting!
Why not just use one of the cheap duraflame fire starters for today, until that arrives from Amazon tomorrow?
This is my second "winter" in the new house. Last year, the smoke sort of leaked out until the box got good and hot creating the necessary draft. End result was a house that smelled like a camp fire for several days.
This thing was recommend by the company that did the chimney sweep/ inspection.

Yeah, definitely have had the drafting issue in the past. We have a funky 70's fireplace anyways, so we usually end up with at least some smoke in the house when we use it.Originally posted by chronical View PostThat is probably what I will do.

i heat with wood. my stove is closed but if you want a draft of air out you have to have air in . most newer homes are sealed to tight to feed a stove.
vent outside air to the stove or fireplace for efficiency . keep the heat in and feed the draft with cold air.

Upside down fire! Has some very good uses in the woods, but never thought of using it indoors. Makes sense though..Originally posted by Rafa View PostGonna sound funny, but I start my fireplace at top of pile. I load it up and place a piece of firestarter under top piece of wood. Been doing that for 2 seasons.
I have crumpled a piece newspaper and lit it on top of the wood before, to help get the draft going, but still lit the actual fire in the traditional manner (from underneath the rack).
