FORT WORTH — A driver who dragged a Fort Worth police officer for several blocks died Monday night after the officer fired into the car.
The incident happened just before 7:30 along the Loop 820 access road just south of East Rosedale Street.
Police said the driver had warrants and was told by an officer that he was under arrest after being pulled over.
"The driver of the vehicle said he was not going to jail and refused to get out," said Fort Worth police spokesman Sgt. Pedro Criado. "At that point [the officer] attempted to extract the driver of the vehicle to place him under arrest. The driver made the decision to drive off, dragging the officer approximately two blocks."
Criado said the unidentified officer, fearing for his life, fired an "unknown number of shots" into the vehicle.
The driver, whose name was not released, was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital by ambulance, where he later died.
The officer was also transported for medical treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Three children who were in the car when the shots were fired were unhurt.
