I completed an audition today for Storage Wars Dallas. It is down to myself and about 20 others. I will find out in a few weeks whether I make it or not. Wish me luck please...that's all.

They have been posting the audition details on various websites and CL. My wife works with a guy in San Diego who is good friends with the casting director. I got to bypass about 3-4 interviews and go right to the final ones. and Thanks for the well wishes.Originally posted by grove ratshiiiiiit.. i love em thick

I thought the same thing when I first saw the show... I am in somewhat agreeance with you..but I have been buying units for about 6 months now and have come across a few cool items. The last unit I bought I paid $225 (plus tax) for and among tons of household items/furniture/etc I found a turn of the century 8-panel Chinese silk screen. It is currently being appraised, but the guy's initial thought is somewhere in the $1500-$2000 range. Not counting that I made around $500 on what was in the unit, but that is not typical. I have always doubled and alot of times tripled, if not more, my money. Plus they are fun as hell.Originally posted by Dave View PostThat show is rigged. Who would not pay a $150 monthly charge, let it go, only to have $5000 worth of treasure inside? That is true. I have been in 'the game' for a little over a year, and while you can make money on just about every unit, you are still hauling away a bunch of useless junk. Now, if you owned a resale shop where your clientele would buy used clothes, linens and some other misc items, you would do pretty well IMO.Originally posted by thesource View PostEveryone I know thats won storage units got a bunch of shit they had to pay to dispose of.
The last unit I bought, I paid $55 for it. I saw a box for a BBQ Galore brand outdoor stainless fridge in the unit, and it looked to be unopened. I got lucky and the fridge was brand new in the box. The 10x25 locker was a swimming pool company that had shut down and was full of pool stuff. I called up the people who put in my swimming pool last year and he came to the locker and hauled a whole truck full of misc connectors, lighting and electrical stuff and gave $550 on the spot. I ended up making over $1k on a $55 room, and I kept the outdoor fridge!

My brother worked at All Storage for a couple years and would tell me stories of these auctions back in the day. He said people would bid and really make out on it. I personally cant fathom why someone wouldnt pay to get their stuff back but Im sure there is a multitude of reasons. Me and him actually contemplated doing the auctions to make money (he couldnt participate because he was an employee, so I would have had to do it) but I was just on the go to much then.Originally posted by Dave View PostThat show is rigged. Yea that kind of stuff is fun. I quit my job @ the honda dealer in november and started thrifting/flipping full time. Making good money and having fun doing it. EX: found a MINT Loro Piana Deerskin 3/4 length coat (8 grand new). Paid 20 bucks for it. Put it on ebay and sold it for 3 grand. Not bad for a days work! Now that's not the norm, but i make at least a few hundred bucks a day when i want to work, and have a blast doing it! Its like a treasure hunt!Originally posted by V8tt View PostI thought the same thing when I first saw the show... Leah...go to the Tarrant County Courthouse and pay $.75 for a paper called the Commercial Recorder. It lists a ton of auctions about 2-3 weeks out from the date. You can also look in the back of the Star Telegram, but there are less listed there. Thanks for the well wishes!Originally posted by Leah View PostIt looks fun! Will do and thanks! The interviewer wasn't sure which part of DFW they would be filming in, but be damned sure if I get on and find out I will let you guys now in case some of you want to check it out.Originally posted by Pro88LX View PostLMK if you need someone to go out there with you, i think that would be a blast!! Someone mentioned it best to have a thrift store to move stuff, which I fully agree makes things easier...but then you deal with overhead, employees, etc etc. I own a restaurant and am not looking to get into any more leases, so what I do is work with someone who pays me for lots (smallwares, clothes, etc etc) and he takes them to Mexico and resells there.Originally posted by grove ratshiiiiiit.. i love em thick

Yeah, you can't just expect to be a pack rat I'd imagine. Personally, when I sell my home and move I'll be buying a 20' trailer for the move. I was going to use a shop/garage to store purchased stuff in until mostly sold via ebay, craigslist and garage sale.Originally posted by V8tt View PostSomeone mentioned it best to have a thrift store to move stuff, which I fully agree makes things easier...but then you deal with overhead, employees, etc etc. I own a restaurant and am not looking to get into any more leases, so what I do is work with someone who pays me for lots (smallwares, clothes, etc etc) and he takes them to Mexico and resells there.
I have no intentions of making large profit. For me it's more about finding treasure/cool stuff that I keep.
My Dad got into the dumpster business. He has these trailers with 8' sides and they dump. 8x14...8x12...etc. Anyway, part of the fun of that business for him is seeing what people throw out during house cleanings, estate clean outs...etc. ALMOST like buying a storage unit, 'cept they pay him and probably less likely to find super great things that are NOT damaged.Originally posted by MR EDDU defend him who use's racial slurs like hes drinking water.

I was doing this shit almost 10 years ago. Have not done it in 4 or so years. Best one I ever won was a unit with a '99 BMW Z3 for $1500.
Shows like this I am sure have killed it. I know a few guys that were making over a quarter mill a year doing it, but not sure how they are panning out now.
