FWIW, I've been on interviews and hiring panels. I'm fine with mostly anything.
For the levels we were interviewing for, I expected at least a dress shirt tucked in with slacks. Just get shit that fits properly so you dont look messy. I like to rock the suit without tie, way more comfortable and just a bit less formal.
That being said, my boss is a big stickler about suits and it does seem to effect his decision somewhat.

I have always heard not to wear a black suit as well. However, it's better than no suit...who really cares that much.
I typically wear dark grey, black with soft grey stripes, or would wear a navy. Tie is typically a shade of blue. Shirt is white, light blue, or similar.
