update from the local Japanese news source:
A record aboard a Philippine container ship involved in a collision with a US destroyer shows that it took a sharp right turn southeast of the Izu Peninsula around 1:30 AM, about an hour before the collision was reported.
The record shows that the merchant ship, the ACX Crystal, then navigated east for about 30 minutes before making a U-turn and doubling back into the waters where the collision took place.
The ship left Nagoya, central Japan, for Tokyo on Friday evening, and passed south of the Izu Peninsula on Friday at midnight.

probably fake news
Seven US sailors are missing and a commanding officer of a US destroyer is injured after the warship and a merchant ship collided off Japan, the US Navy said.
Washington (CNN)Seven US sailors are missing and one has sustained a head injury after a US destroyer collided with a merchant ship about 56 nautical miles off the coast of Yokosuka, Japan, the Japanese coast guard has told CNN.
The USS Fitzgerald suffered damage to its starboard side above and below the waterline, resulting in some flooding, the Navy said.
A Navy official told CNN the destroyer is under its own power but has limited propulsion.
The vessel was taking on water after the incident, but the crew was working to stabilize the ship by pumping water out of the hold, a US Navy official told CNN.
