cam grinding is the industry term for building camshafts, they are built much like a key at a hardware store with a lobe master.

Some budget rebuilders "regrind" used cams. Most of the time, the term is used for guys that grind cams to custom specs for better results than what's available off the shelf. You send them all the specifics of your motor, then based on the specs/needs/wants, they custom-make (grind) a cam for your motor.

yes, some manufacturers such as megacycle and others re-weld, grind and hard chrome stock cores for things like motorcycles.

Some of the off-the-shelf cams are reground from stock cams too, from what I hear. Supposedly the Ford letter cams were like this for many years.

Back in the "good ole days", a reground cam was about all you could find. Then cam blanks became readily available and a lot of the majors offered new cams ground to all the neat specs. there are today.

The down side of a reground is a reduced base circle. That is no big deal in the family sedan but, not the best for your hot rod without some mods! Adjustable push-rods or cut to fits were needed to correct rocker arm geometry.
