This is the only way to make sure that the paint is mixed correctly, most of the clowns working at ANY autobody store are almost at minumum wage and you really think they care if its mixed correctly? One unit (drop) or more of any tint and the color can be thrown off. Most of the time if you have a perfect mix you can blend the adjacent panels. I always blend. I was using Glasurit water in a shop last year and the match is no better than Dupont or ppg. Shot Standox and spies also, they arn't perfect either. Some colors from some paint mfgrs match some auto mfgrs very close, thats because it's their color on the car. The paint on all cars comes from the paint mfgrs. Different colors from different mfgrs. Remember Mystic Cobras, BASF made the color for for the new money for the treasury department. Gov paid for the research in return BASF got to sell the color to a car mfgr for a limited production car. Turned out to be the Cobra and they called it Mystic, could of easily been the Mystic Corvette.

Speaking of variances, I have heard why there is variances on paint colors from all maufactures. From what I heard was: Say they have a line of green cars that they spray. Say they spray ten of them. Then they spray about five seconds of thinner through the line and start painting white cars. Some of the green gets mixed in with the first and second car. The rest of the cars dont have the green mixed in anymore, so they are whiter than the previous two cars. Therefore you have just created a greener white mix that is now a variance that collision painter will have to match out on the street. Thats what I also heard last time I was in a color matching paint school. Honestly, I havent seen/worked in a shop without a mixing bank since 1995. They even have the 6-8 bank ones where you throw the toners you need to mix on there. They arent the greatest, but they're something. Just about any paint store will cosign a mixing bank and computer to you for no charge if you sign a contract. I'm not trying to start a fight with you, but I would never let a customer make me do that. Thats a safety item and I believe you would get the heck sued out of you if he gets injured in a rear end collision. Even though he said not to install it, you are the professional and you have to follow basic safety rules. I have nothing to back that up with, but it sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.
