I am an independent shop owner and we have a mixing system. It is a must have for any high volume collision repair shop.

trust me i want it bad i hate dealing with the bs from english and other paint houses.

why is this so hard to believe there are tons of other reputable shops that do not have a mixing bank in house.

Um yeah. Nine times out of ten they have credit issues. Are they really that reputable, or are just telling yourself this?
And I need to know did your guy really leave out the rear bumper re-bar? or was it the energy absorber?

Thats why you should have a mixing system in your shop and make your own colors.

This is the only way to make sure that the paint is mixed correctly, most of the clowns working at ANY autobody store are almost at minumum wage and you really think they care if its mixed correctly? One unit (drop) or more of any tint and the color can be thrown off. Most of the time if you have a perfect mix you can blend the adjacent panels. Only the premium refinishing brands (Standox, Glasurit, etc.) can you get away with window payning, but most of the time you need to blend for a spot on color match, especially on metallic colors.

I always blend. I was using Glasurit water in a shop last year and the match is no better than Dupont or ppg. Shot Standox and spies also, they arn't perfect either. Some colors from some paint mfgrs match some auto mfgrs very close, thats because it's their color on the car. The paint on all cars comes from the paint mfgrs. Different colors from different mfgrs. Remember Mystic Cobras, BASF made the color for for the new money for the treasury department. Gov paid for the research in return BASF got to sell the color to a car mfgr for a limited production car. Turned out to be the Cobra and they called it Mystic, could of easily been the Mystic Corvette.

Thats what I also heard last time I was in a color matching paint school. They also said there is a guy watching the cars be painted and he can hit a button to make the color darker or lighter if he thinks they need adjustment.

Honestly, I havent seen/worked in a shop without a mixing bank since 1995. They even have the 6-8 bank ones where you throw the toners you need to mix on there. They arent the greatest, but they're something. Just about any paint store will cosign a mixing bank and computer to you for no charge if you sign a contract. I figure you might as well sign a contract, you have to buy the materials from somewhere, you know.

re-bar was left out per the customers request. he bought a crappy bumper that would not fit with it. he'll clear all this up soon.

I'm not trying to start a fight with you, but I would never let a customer make me do that. Thats a safety item and I believe you would get the heck sued out of you if he gets injured in a rear end collision. Even though he said not to install it, you are the professional and you have to follow basic safety rules. I have nothing to back that up with, but it sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen. Protect yourself and your business.
