If its a dead coil - yes. If it's an intermittent coil that fires some of the time - maybe not. Maybe the later computers throw a code but on my wife's 2000 expedition i've had several coils fail and it only threw a code 1 time. Ford can look at the misfire data and figure out which coil it is, but that's a diagnostic charge.Originally posted by 85turbocoupe View PostShould throw a misfire code. Get it scanned at autozone.
The way i found figured out which coil was bad was that i looked at the voltage on the O2 sensors using an ODBII scan tool and figured out which bank it was on (on one side the voltage didn't switch). Then i replaced the coil on the front cylinder and looked at the O2 sensors again. I then took the coil i had removed and swapped it onto the next cylinder, and kept doing that until i saw the O2 sensor switching voltage again. Problem solved.

If It's missing bad enough or missing long enough it will set a code but Fords parameters for setting misfire codes is pretty wide, the best way to find on is Fords IDS system that can give a live power balance test.Originally posted by 85turbocoupe View PostShould throw a misfire code.
