98 Chevy Z71 Rear End

Anyone know up till what year the rear ends are interchangable for a 98 Z71? Rear let loose this morning and looking for a replacement. Looking for a 10 or 14 bolt with 3.73 gears in it. If you happen to have one for sale let me know.

im sure the axles will probably swap, but remember, youll need 6 lug for 4wd

The one I found is from a 96 Z71 so it is a 6 lug and everything will match up perfect. Getting everything from brake hub to brake hub to make the swap easy.

When my rear end went out this morning it would still drive in reverse. Had to drive the truck back to the house for 8 miles in reverse at 6 MPH. Luckly it was all country roads and only got a few odd looks....

You have no idea...Tried to use rear view mirror for some of it but damn that shit is hard to do. After taking out someone's mail box with brush guard I decided it was best that I just stayed turned around.

Back to looking....Drove all the way out to BFE Rhome for a rear end that was supposed to be a 3.73 but ended up being a 3.42...Waste of day and gas......

Those diffs have always been hard to find in the right ratio. When you find them, they are usually in beat up shape. Building your differential might be a better option for you if you plan to keep the truck.

Yeah they are getting harder to find...I found a few more but like most looking to spend as least as possible...Got a lead on one now for cheap but guy does not know ratio so he going to pull cover and check tomorrow.

When looking at the actual gears..What do you count to find out the ratio?

Open the diff cover and count the number of teeth on the ring and pinion gears. The number of teeth on the ring gear divided by the number of teeth on the pinion gear equals the gear ratio.

For 3.73's the likely scenario will be 41 teeth on the ring gear and 11 teeth on the pinion.

Looks like the differnce in gears come from the # of teeth on the pinion gear. How much goes into changing out just the pinion gear. I ask cause I found a cheap 3.42 rear end.

You can't just change one, the teeth won't mesh correctly. They have to be a matched set.
