  • anyone ever rebuilt a 5.4 Triton

The reason i ask will be explained below.

Im downgrading trucks to cover a healthy dp on a house this spring. having already sold my truck im finding it hard to get something, i'd actually drive, for the right price.

I dont plan to spend over 5k on a new truck but I need a few basic things

    1. fullsize v8
    2. Extended cab
    3. CLEAN!! (no beater work trucks)
    4. 4x4 would be a plus

So, what im trying to buy is a 1998-2003 f-150,ext cab, that has pretty much been driven to the office and back and garge kept.

    kinda hard for 5k

Ive found a few, but they are pushing 200k

Thats my reason for the question. so anyone???

ive got my eye on this one btw.

I built the 5.4 in my lightning pretty much same motor besides the supercharger parts. I have the special valve spring tool for mod motors.

I have a ford cd somewhere as well that covers the 5.4 with all the specs and assembly procedures, ill see if I can find it.

wonder more on a $$ level. what would i be looking at to get the longblock redone. wasnt sure if their were any crazy expenses that would come up as im use to pushrod motors.

if the truck is clean enough, ill throw money in it over time to keep it alive.

My mother's 5.4 had 330k and the odometer stopped working. Eventually the tranny died, but the motor still runs. I'd drive it until it blows up and then find another one from a salvage yard.

I have a 98 Silverado with 173K on it for $3600. If you are dead set on a Ford, there are deals to be found. My dad got his 01 King Ranch for a little over 5K. As for the rebuild, it's almost the same as a 4.6L. Not that difficult really.

You stuck on a ford? I'd expand the search to a 5.3 chevy. I have a friend who picked up a super clean 99 4x4 with 180k miles for around $5k.

My 00 expy has 270k with the 5.4 and is still strong. I wouldn't worry about the engine unless something was obviously wrong.

piston slap > popping out spark plugs

the irony here is that the 5.4 has had piston slap issues as well.
