  • 3.31 vs 2.73 gas mileage

Been kicking around the idea of getting some 3.31 gears in my 95 GT, But dont want to ruin my gas mileage by getting a steeper gear, Will going up to 3.31s on my 95 5.0 hurt my mileage, Im curious that maybe I will get better mileage with the 3.31s, But after google research all I could find on 3.31s is more based on the newer edge mustang. I did research the 3.27s & some people claim they got better gas mileage. Most of my driving when I drive my 95 is Hwy cause I go to Kaufman at least two times a week & out to my property once a week, One way to Kaufman is 48 miles & my property is 36 miles. With Fuel going up over $4 a gallon this summer. Gas mileage is important to me in this car cause I either drive my Work truck or this car when I go far. Really shooting for 30mpg Hwy out my 95 GT.

So for gas mileage sake. Stick with the 2.73s or step up to 3.31s, I tach right at 1800 RPM at 65 mph with the 2.73s & the car feels pretty quick for having stock gears.

I got 2-3 mpg better when I switched to 3.73's in my 86.

I get 22 mpg with 3.73s in my 85. I only got around 19 with the stock 2.73s

I do a good amount of city driving

Gears has been one of my favorite mods yet.

      get them!

Even if you got slightly better mileage, I wouldn't bother. Gear swaps are expensive to the point that any gas savings will be far down the road. Then you have to deal with broken parts during install, poor installation, whining (not likely with 3.31s), etc.

I'd just stick with what you have for highway driving.

Since you asked, I would expect gas mileage to be about the same with both gears, probably a little better with the 2.73s since you drive mostly highway.

my last stock LSC 5.0L had 3.27's in it and my last modded LSC 5.0L had 3.55's and both got near same economy. same amount of gas would get me the same distance in both.

If you have a 5 speed, the switch would be hardly noticeable in a lighter, better trans geared car such as a Mustang.

2.73's to 3.27's or 3.31's would be miniscule.

more gear will get you more mileage if you do alot of in town driving. A slight change, like .27 to .73 will not doo much, youd ahve to go to a 4.10, but highway will most likely be affected then

OK! Well Im gonna save my money then. Thanks guys, I found a set off ebay for $30 shipped was why I asked & figured i could do the install myself with it being a lower gear ratio. But cost of gears & fluid & time & learning curve of setting up the gears sounds like it doest = out to the effort or money involved
