That's what I'm screaming. There was nothing. Tick-tick-tick turned to thump-thump-thump within 1/4 mile. No smoke. No hard starts. Nothing.

My buddies 06 did this about two years ago. Said there were a ton of them at the dealership for the same reason. Dropped a piston due to a injector IIRC. Driving great and then boom with a puff of smoke. His had 160k on it.

Yep. Like aggie97 said; 150k is the life of the injector. I know now it's nothing to let slide.

I'd say its time to buy a new truck.

If you had something bad come apart, all that metal shaving went into everything, all bearings, into the head, into the turbo, etc....

Plus swapping motors in those things is a job. That motor is freaking heavy.

while it's out, rebuild the injectors. Their life if 150k miles so you got your money's worth. A buddy just did his cheaper than what is out there but I don't have the link at hand. Can get it if you want. Something like $275 per injector instead of the usual $400 plus core.

Same thing Motor Parts Plus said - also said injector problem is very likely what caused this little disaster. A link would be great.

Is Motor Parts Plus connected with G & S Diesel? G&S has the ad on CL but there's a similar ad from Motor Parts Plus. Different phone numbers.

Not sure. Never heard of G&S. Probably connected though if the ads are close.

Anybody got suggestions? After doing some checking around, got prices ranging between 5k to 10k, then found a shop in Kaufman with rebuilt longblock for $3250 (exchange) w/6 month unlimited mileage warranty.

Is that about as good a price as I'm gonna get? Any other suggestions I ought to try out before buying a longblock?

If it's Motor Parts Plus, then they are good people, I have dealt with them a lot over the years. They do good work out of their machine shop. They are a little rough around the edges on manners, it's definitely an old school parts house/machine shop.

main bearings seem to go before rods on the Cummins... hopefully it won't take much to overhaul it

Man, that'd be the best thing. I just cannot imagine this motor blowing up - I never have worked this truck hard.

That's kind of where I'm leaning. I can't make a decision based on somebody listening to a knock and saying "it's PROBABLY..."

It will probably be easier and cheaper just to find a complete low mile engine rather than rebuild it. That's what I've done for a couple.

Get a nv5600 in there

That may be a good idea too.

I'd love to have the NV5600. Hey it's only money and Obama prints more every day.
