  • Burnt #2 piston in my 2008 F350 6.4.

Has anyone here had any experience rebuilding one of these yet? I managed to burn up #2 and possibly #7 after some hard pulls on my tuned/deleted 6.4. I've been looking into some aftermarket coated and machined pistons but the diesel shop I took it too is claiming that when these have problems like this, it is cheaper to buy a reman short block from Ford than to fix the one I got. Is this true? So far I have two quotes, $6500 for a reman and labor or $7500 to fix mine. If I remember right these are sleeved blocks so shouldn't I be able to take it to a machine shop and have it re-sleeved for a set of .20 pistons? I'm hoping they are wrong and I can get someone else to do it for less than that. Any advice would be helpful.

They are not pressed in liners. Not since the 7.3

If you can get a Ford shortblock done for $7500 at a reputable shop, jump on it. We charge $8500 for that job. Set aside another $2000-2600 for heads when you find yours are cracked to death

If you plan on keeping it and beating on it, hope you didn't touch the cylinder when it blew through the piston. Do coated de-lipped pistons, etc.

That's what I'll do if one of mine shits the bed.

We don't fuck with all that on customer trucks. Takes too long and no money in it. If the heads check good we can have them back on the road in two days with a new Ford unit

Sucks man, there's been a rash of them lately. Four in the last month at our shop. Maybe four in the previous year prior.

I fucking love 6.4's, but they can get expensive on you with a quickness

Sorry, just read that wasn't with labor. With tax it comes in about $8900 turn key for a new Ford unit

Damn! That's what I was afraid of. Oh we'll, looks like I'm getting a cheap beater for a while until I can get the funds together. I plan on keeping it so I guess it's time for upgrades now. Thanks for the help Cooter.

The problem is there's a lot of labor involved so you don't want to half-ass patch it unless you're unloading it

Nice man! So here is the money question, what is your favorite SD engine? I have mine, wondering yours.

                      my favorite is the 6.4

I wouldn't recommend it as the best workhorse or as the most reliable, but for pure bang for the buck hotrod, you can't touch it

Hey Ch3rnobyl, would you mind posting a pic of your truck? My 08 F250 has stock suspension with 35s. I was thinking about doing a small 2.5" lift with 37s, just wondering how yours looks.
