After how many miles does a block need to be machined and have the internals balance? I'm thinking of changing out my pistons from flat top to reverse dome and have read that they recommend it, my motor has less than 1k miles on it. Do I still need to have that work done??

I wouldn't "machine" that block unless there was a problem. It should be fine. Vat the block, new bearings, new oil pump, new rings and pistons and send it down the road.

Did I talk to you today about this maybe? If I did, I didn't realize you only had 1k miles on the setup. You shouldn't need machine work, just rebalance.

Have the bore checked and honed if it's ok. 1000 miles can be a lot of 1/4 mile passes.

If the new pistons weight is different from your old ones it should be rebalanced.
