  • Who is the resident 4l60 builder?

I have the 97ss pulled apart and need someone to do some trans work while its out of the car. My trans guy is booked for weeks, so if possible i am looking for a reputable guy in the north Dallas area.

I vaguely remember a guy on the old board named Mike, possibly in ft worth? Is Mike still around?

After spending several thousand dollars at Phoenix Racing transmissions in Weatherford trying to get a 4l60E "race built" transmission to survive behind my 430 hp high 12 sec 94 T/A...I gave up and bought a used one that was built by a shop in Denton. That USED transmission I bought for $350 bucks was still working nearly 8 years later with no problems when I sold the car in 2013. I wish I knew who built it. I would ask around on the F-body boards before I spent my money. Id suggest a 4L80E...but they're freakin HEAVY.

My 4L60E from Phoenix lasted over 2 years in my 480 HP, low 12 second Impala at the time. I made a shit load of passes on it too. It finally did die, and I wanted to spray, so I put in a TH400. I had enough of those $2k 4L60E rebuilds.

TH400 was badass at the track and solid as a rock, but took all the fun out of driving on the street. That was a big factor in me selling it, I think if I would have gone with a T-56 I would still be rolling it. Live and learn.

The guys at Phoenix are about as capable of working on cars as my 4 year old. I had gears installed there and when I had to have another shop fix the whine they were a good bit off. Off enough that the gears were ruined

I'd still suggest a 4l80e and be done with it.

There is no such thing as a built 4l60, you would be wasting money on "stronger internal parts".

That being said with a trans cooler, temp gauge, a used tci 3500 stall, cutting 1.6 60ft's my stock one never gave up the ghost. I put 40k miles on it and the last year I was intentionally trying to blow it to give me a reason to swap my t56 in but it never gave up the ghost.

Find a local transmission shop with a warranty. It's just a truck transmission that was mass produced for a decade.

Call Mike, avoid Phoenix or anyone else local. You can build a very tough 4L60E. The weak points are the input housing and the reaction shell. Upgrade these to the Sonnax pieces and it'll handle 500hp for a long time.

From daily drivers and street/strip upgrades to 500+ HP racing applications, find your 700R4, 4L60E, 4L65E, 4L70E performance transmission solutions here.

It'll cost $600 more than a conventional rebuild but at least it won't be blowing out the 3-4 clutches all the time.
