The newspaper said the deal was for one year at $2.5 million. Elam played under Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in Cleveland for the past two seasons when Ryan was the defensive coordinator there.
Also, Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman suffered an apparent groin injury during practice Wednesday. Newman walked gingerly off the field after getting tangled with a receiver during pass coverage drills.
After staying on the ground briefly, Newman slowly walked across the field to the sideline, where he crouched before being tended to by a trainer. He left the field shortly after that.
An MRI was planned to determine the severity of the injury.
The Cowboys did not comment about the seriousness of the injury, but a team source told the Star-Telegram late Wednesday he hopes Newman will be back in time for the season opener.
Newman, who is going into his ninth NFL season, missed all four preseason games in 2008 because of a groin injury. He returned for the season opener, but later missed five games because of a sports hernia and played a career-low 10 games that season.
Newman started all 32 games the past two seasons. He didn't miss a game last season despite dealing with ankle and rib injuries.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The 29-year-old Williams was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2005 draft by the Bucs. He rushed for 1,178 yards as a rookie but missed most of the 2007 and 2008 seasons with knee injuries, and lost his spot as the feature back in the Buccaneers backfield last season to LeGarrette Blount.
Williams is expected to be the No. 2 man in the Rams backfield behind Jackson. Norwood, who also returns kicks, is expected to be No. 3.
Bucs coach Raheem Morris praised Williams. "One of those guys who was definitely our team leader. He'll be missed around here," Morris told the Tampa Tribune. "Those types you never forget. It's a business. Those things happen. You move on and you embrace this new

RB 'Cadillac' Williams reportedly rolling west to St. Louis

As of this morning, there are five teams over the salary cap: OAK $15.25 mil; PITT $8.5m; DET $7.8m; DALLAS $6.7m: HOUSTON $3.25m.
And Dallas wonders why they can't sign anybody.....
First, how bad is Oaklands front office if they are 15 mill over the cap and are one of the worst teams in the league?
Second, can we please get a real GM in Dallas?
Third, how was two teams (houston and Dallas) in the running for Nnamdi if they are already over the cap?

Evidently the Eagles made a post retirement offer to Randy Moss for a lowball offer. I guess they are willing to try anything.
Moss was asked because of the situation around Jeremy Maclain

They first were asking for a first round pick but teams weren't interested in that. We could be the team to get him if we can also sign a new contract for him. He had his best years when Spagnolu was the defensive cordinator in New York.

Also Rams just signed Carnell (Cadillac) Williams to a deal. Terms of the deal wasn't released but most likely a 1 year deal. I like how we are getting more depth at the RB position behind Steven Jackson with signing Jerious Norwood earlier in the week and now Williams today.
