So the improvements he made in the offseason and his performance in spring training amounts to nothing? That's where guys like him get their shot. And he was nothing short of impressive. This isn't like football, with a 16 game season and every game is critical. And I get that they are flat out desperate when it comes to pitching. I just don't see what it's going to hurt giving the kid a shot. I think his spring training performance has earned him the chance.

Again, he "tears it up" every preseason. He's had his shot 3 or 4 times. I'm preparing a list of guys I would take over Davis. Anyone that has hit .230 in the bigs will do just fine.

I do think Beltre is still hurt (I'm not sure for how long). "Instant success" hardly describes Davis' yoyo-ing between the bigs and the minors. He could be "OK" at third at times, but I just don't think he warrants a roster spot on the defending American League Champs roster.

FWIW, Davis hit .285 in 80 games (295 AB) in his first trip up (2008) and .238 in 113 games (391 AB, with 150 strikeouts) in the his second year (2009). His "career" average is .248 in 806 AB, but he strikes out roughly once every 3 trips to the plate.

He can hit the fastball, but he can't hit anything else. The reason he lit it up his first year? Major League pitchers tried to get Major League fastballs by a fastball-hitting AAA player. The reason he tanked at the end of his first season and the next 2 seasons? Major League pitchers, coaches, and scouts aren't dumb.

Each game is crucial, for starters. The AL West had the largest discrepancy between first and second place at 9 games; every other division race was within 6 games and two were within two games.

Baseball isn't like football in that one game isn't enough time to give a player a chance. It's a streaky, streaky, streaky game and you've got to give a player 5+ starts in a short time frame to really give them an opportunity to display their abilities.

It hurts to give him a shot when he goes 2 for 15 with 5 strikeouts during that chance that "doesn't hurt". I just don't see how having him in HELPS the Rangers, even if it doesn't hurt. Sure, the glove is nice to have, but the age of the pitcher has returned and pitching is the name of the game. Offensive production is down, pitching prowess is up, and a good bat just isn't something you can afford to give up.

And aside from all of that, he's had chance after chance. And he's shown up in spring training before, but he still hasn't shown up aside from hitting fastballs off, and I quote, "a guy who'll be bagging groceries in a couple of weeks."
