So if my grandmother leaves $125k cash to me as an inheritance, I'm a criminal for having it in the car with me... or for depositing it in a lump sum... or for breaking up deposits so as not to arouse suspicion. Any of these actions can lead to my legally-attained cash being stolen from me and I have to come up with PROOF that I have a legal right to possess it?
Pay stubs? WTF. Remind me what country we live in and what expectations of freedom we should have.
I think the LEOs here need to take a step back and look at the policies they enforce. This is real, honest, jack-booted-thug bullshit.
I can just see it know, "Granny's dead, here's $125,000 in CASH"....

When they see an out-of-state plate, they will get behind the vehicle and run the plate. I'm only assuming it's to see the driver's criminal history. I'd be willing to bet that if some drug arrests popped-up, you'd be getting pulled-over. I know one of them had the spotlight pointed at the plate on my GMC truck, I wasn't speeding, just had it on cruise in the right lane, and he pulled onto the highway and followed me for a couple miles. I was somewhat nervous since all I had was a change of clothes and little else with me. I guess when he ran the tags and saw that ol' Matt Blansett was clean, he made a u-turn and went back to his fishing hole. If anyone else has been through TN on I-40, you've probably seen them, and I don't think I've ever gone by and not seen someone pulled-over.
You can't run a criminal history from a plate.

And if so, do you have a problem with that?
You cannot (legally or morally) take someones money on a "hunch". I've seen guys roll around Stop 6 with wads of cash, and suspected illegal gains, but there's nothing you can do without PC.
If they are in fact dirty, there's another day to catch them.

Wrong.
If he is trained to do it, the vicarious liability lands on the department. If they fail to take corrective action (training) they are liable.
Go ahead and refuse to believe the truth.
That's exactly why people sue entities instead of focusing on the individual officer. The deep pockets lie with the agency.

If one guy did it and got hammered for it by his chain of command, do you think it would continue?
If the DOJ would address this as illegal, do you think an officer would thumb their nose at a 1983 violation?
Unless you have evidence of a crime, it is unconstitutional for this practice, IMHO.

Props for a good post.
I made a deposit today of cash considered sizeable. I am so glad I did not get pulled over and have to PROVE I came about it legally.
Imagine if they just take the whole car......"you need to prove that you paid for this with money earned on the up and up. Until then, thighten your shoe laces"
