The contributions are pre-tax on gross income, so in effect I pay 33% of my own retirement, and I pay 100% of my 457b retirement.

The city has a far better retirement than it did in the 80's,90's and early 2000's when the markets were good and peoples 401k plans were profitable. The fact that the economy went to the crapper, and we negotiated for a better retirement makes the PD employees a target for the media. There wasn't a single article about how bad our retirement was in the Star Telegram in those days, but now we are being made to look like we are fleecing the city. The city feeding the Telegram information is one way to make he citizens side with the city council.

I hired when retirement was shitty, and have been through the ups and downs. If you want a good retirement, do what I did.

By the way, check your President's retirement, or any Congressman's. I'm willing to bet those people (as well as military) don't contribute to the system while they are working.

Nice dig on the military there scooter. As ex military you know we also, in your own words, pay taxes and our retirement isn't guaranteed. Want proof? Look at everytime there is a debt ceiling hit, first thing that gets held back is veterans benefits. They also up our medical and have refined the policies so that unless you fit a very small area, you don't get medical coverage any longer for life. And our actual retirement benefits? They're a joke. Vets went without a COLA for 3 years and I think last year we got 1%.

So, tell me again. What is your retirement compared to mine? I average 30k a year in retirement.
