So what sets the SAM is it automatic or must it be fired by an operator? One would think it’s setup to probably not to shoot down 737 s leaving the airport but it’s Middle East. These people are smart enough to build a Nuke but can’t figure out how not to accidentally shoot down civilian aircraft?

There are lots of different systems, we know it was missiles though so yeah someone gave a fire order. Now if it was their most modern and effective system which is what you'd be using if you are expecting a squadron of F-35s it would have been an S-300 and if it's like the ones in Syria they could have had Russians running it.
