wood gel stain

I did not know about this wood gel stain till today. My old lady is staining our bathroom cabinet with Java gel stain. Was told today it really is not a stain more like paint. It just stay on the wood instead of soaking in the wood. Who has ever messed with wood gel stain. Is it worth a shit.
