Cheap platforms for a cafe style bike

You'll pay a little more for the CB's as they are one of the more desired bikes for this type of project.

In a quick Craigslist search (statewide!! lol) I found a few in Austin. There is a 91 cb750 in Dallas for $1100 obo. It is still a framed bike that would have more up to date suspension and a little more power. The pics look to be an air cooled motor. There are others in Dallas as well. A few in the Killeen-temple area as well. San Antonio has some as well.


I'll see about getting some pics up. I've got a little more work to do with my seat cushion before I get it upholstered.

yea i was hoping for something in the 300 dollar range. It will get stripped and cleaned so im not super worried about aesthetics. I want to do a cb just because like you said, they're more popular so it should be easier to find used parts. You talking about that nighthawk in dallas? i saw that ad.

I plan on making my own rear sets from a newer crotch rocket.

Once I have it done for phase 1 I will start sourcing a 4 cylinder engine to build up and turbo. Then it will be a seriously badass cafe racer.

I'll be happy to attempt an answer anytime. This is my first build, so I'm trying not to bite off more than I know I can chew this first time around, hence the rough first phase.

My dad used to build bikes, but he stayed with Harley, BSA, Triumph, and Norton. I have help from a buddy who used to run a Kawasaki Shop back in the 70's and 80's, which is why I went with Kawasaki.

1980 CB900 custom looks to be in very good shape. Thats the one with shaft drive and a dual range transmission (10 speed). Motor is a DOHC inline 4..good for about 85-90 hp.

If you can come up with another frame with a title...that 1980 would be a great choice. 1980 Had the DOHC 750...FAR more modern and capable than the older SOHC model.

just wondering if its an easy swap if for some reason i end up with a title less bike, and locate an older frame with a title. plus my uncle who restored old honda bikes may have something lying around. or if i find an older sohc bike with a bad engine and want to swap to dohc

Why not just get that one titled? So long as it's not stolen it's easy and I seriously doubt there is a lien on a 30 y/o bike.
