My Grandpa collected Buicks for decades, he decided that his three oldest grandsons would each get one. My brother was to get his 73 Rivi GS white on white special. I was going to get his 59 4 door Lesabra, and my I can't remember what my younger cousin was supposed to get. In the end, he sold the 73, took the 59 apart and sold the parts, and said after my cousin got a 66 mustang coupe that he didn't need a Buick any more. I ended up being the only one to get a car. I got his 72 brown Rivi GS with bucket seats, not complaining at all...... but I really wish I'd ended up with the 59. I still have a picture of one he gave me when I was around 12.

59-60 were truly killer years for GM cars.
GM was getting out of the shoebox look, going towards what is often referred as the "Linear Look" years. these Chevrolets, Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs and Caddilacs were just outta fuckin control in every aspect:
Styling - both exterior and interior. we saw miles of chrome outside, as well as inside. every power option you could throw at these mile-long cars were installed. as well as an array of gadgets - e-z-eye glass, wonderbar radio systems as well as transistor portables, safety sentinel that allowed the driver to select a speed via a dial in the dash in which a buzzer would go off if the desired speed was exceeded (mainly used to stay away from tickets), twilight sentinel system that 'sensed' the light outside and turned the lights on and off, power seats, tissue boxes, his and her's ashtrays, and litter boxes (trash cans) galore. all the different interior and exterior trim models... fuck its a mouthful trying to name them all.
engines/transmissions - we saw bigger oldsmobile rockets, buick nailheads and cadillac mills. smooth-shifting jetaways (olds), twin turbines (buick), etc. which are actually crap and can't withstand the speed limits and abuse of today's roads, but compared to back then, your BOP car (buick, olds, pontiac) was the smoothest ride on the road. actually, now that i think about it, they were shitty even back then.
the aftermarket was right there behind all these new advancements in motor technology back then, too.. the famous stone woods & cook willys gasser (THE gasser to beat) ran a 394 olds back in those times (well, 61-62 if you wanna get technical).
wheels/tires - 59 and 60 saw bigger 15" wheels being offered with some pretty bland hubcaps if you ask me but these years also got the COOLEST tires that were super comfy.. huge 4-ply bias plys standard on electras, ninety-eights, bonnevilles, coupe de villes (sedans were the same size as CDVs)...
the marketing during these Linear Years was outta control, too... fucking Florence Henderson (Mrs. Brady) did Oldsmobile commercials, you had the 59 Chevrolet everywhere, etc.. they pulled out all the tricks and they worked. everyone, i mean ALL THE OLD TIMERS, remember these cars and how awesome they were the new thing.

Don't forget Pontiac! '59 was the start of the "wide track" movement and for a big car, the '59 Poncho is my favorite. I don't like the 60's, but the smaller platform of the '61 is up there as well.
