It could be that grime got into places that could not be cleaned unless the engine was dismantled as much as it has been in the pictures provided.

Ever seen an engine like that? I sure have. My 20y/o POS is just like that. There will be all kinds of grime that cannot be seen unless the intake is separated from the heads and then one can observe the "catch all" which happens when the intake stays on for long periods of time, and the origin of the leaves from the initial pictures have already been explained there, good doctor. I don't think I've ever wiped down the LS9 in my Vette. I do however wash the exterior, and religiously change the oil, brake fluid, brakes, etc. as I track it regularly. I don't give a crap if the engine bay is dusty as long as it takes care of business when I hit the happy pedal.

I think what everyone is getting at is that the care given to the exterior reflects the care given to the interior...
When you pull up to a shanty with a unkempt lawn do you believe that the interior is in good shape? Someone cares for their engine generally cares enough to keep their engine somewhat clean. Not always, but most of the time.
