FROM what I've been reading these "minor" villains are just stepping stones for a full on Apocalypse showdown. Fox is going to do same like Marvel’s movies leading up to a Thanos showdown.

yup, if you follow the story line, this is pretty much a segway into the Apocalypse era of the series if i remember it correctly, basically them trying to change the future to stop the Sentinels changed the future into Apocalypse running the show.
