I would say its not calibrated but they weren't doing a penetration test so no biggie. The wound channels are similar enough that I'm not going to sweat caliber selection I'm just going to pick one of the major calibers. In my case I've chosen 9mm in anG17 and G26

either gun is better than no gun lol.... I dont own a 9mm anymore but do own a .380, .40, and a .45.. I feel if my life was in danger and i had one bedside i probably would grab the .45 just because its bigger and i have some nasty loads... As far as anything else.. I wouldnt even want to be shot with a .22.. unless the "bad guy is a doper on a lot of pain pills or other sort of drugs".... If you get shot you probably will stop no matter what size of the caliber

Doesn't matter. If you are not carrying, you are not effective. What caliber you carry doesn't mean squat if you don't exercise your rights 24/7. IMO, it really does not matter what caliber you carry so as long as it's a setup you use daily and is comfortable on your person.

Well this was a re-education for me. I was sold on the temporary cavity theory. I'll be moving to heavier 9mm and 380 projectiles for my carry pistols.

I heard, big bullets make big holes. Regardless, I'm of the theory of: more mass = more momentum = more difficult to slow down.Originally posted by forbes View Posthow does that one saying go?
it can be argued that a 9 mm may expand, but it is an undeniable fact that a 45 will not shrink...
something like that , i cant find it
I carry a .40, just because I wanted more rounds than a standard .45 and more mass than a 9mm. I consider it the compromise.
I've hunted the above plus deer. I want to try pig hunting...well...to try it!Originally posted by forbes View Posti have only hunted birds, duck, turkey and pheasant. not my cup of tea. i want to try boar hunting, but when you brought up the coming at you part... i dunno. seems a little sketch to me... i almost just soon watch lol

Hogs are fun, I prefer stalking them and shooting them close instead of far. I'm trying some new things. Like I mentioned earlier I shot my last hog with my 870 using some hand loaded buckshot.Originally posted by forbes View Posti have only hunted birds, duck, turkey and pheasant. not my cup of tea. i want to try boar hunting, but when you brought up the coming at you part... i dunno. seems a little sketch to me... i almost just soon watch lol
I was near the edge of a large tank and there were some fresh wallows near a large patch of cat tails (about 30x60ft). I walked up on the cat tails, walked around them, threw rocks into them trying to scare the pigs outs, I walked through the cat tails (which are about ~7ft tall) several times, yelled, etc.. nothing. When I was walking the parimeter heading back the way I came I saw a pig butt hanging out... I thought to myself... "it doesn't smell like a dead pig." So I aimed at it and it ran through the cat tails where I fired where I thought it was. I ran up a hill out of sight, I chased after it - when I got back to the top it doubled back at me and I got it right in the head.

Yeah that works for me, haha. I've been hunting hogs for a while, and I've learned a whole lot about calibers and effectiveness. Expansion, Hydrostatic shock, cavity expansion, etc. etc.. are all theories more or less. From what I've personally experienced - and which has changed my perceptions, penetration is very important. Some might say "over penetration is wasted energy" Well - consider this for instance. A decent hog is about 20"+ wide. A hot .45 ACP or 10mm will punch through that in some situations. but if they are coming at you, depending on where you hit you might not get the necessary penetration, because you need even more. I've seen HP rounds expand and completely stop on a bone 1" deep - they literally did nothing.Originally posted by forbes View Posthow does that one saying go?

But, again for self defense rounds I shoot a 135gr out of my 10mm at 1550fps - so it explodes like a grenade inside a person. I'm trying to avoid over pen in that situation.
