I'm obviously overstepping on specifically equating morality with religion, and the atrocities committed. I overgeneralized the same as you did in suggesting that an apparent decline in morality alone could bring about the fall of the Roman Empire. There were a number of factors involved, all subject to debate.

The point I really wanted to make is that when any group with a particular belief system begins to legislate or enforce theirs over others, then we run into problems. At what point to does one group stop tolerating another's beliefs? If society is to run amok, I'd feel better about it running to excess than the historical alternative where imposition of beliefs against others is often at sword point of some form or another.

I also agree that all sin is equal in God's eyes, we put levels of severity on them.

But according to God, we are not to pass judgement on anyone or anything, only God shall pass final judgement. We are to love eachother, no matter their sin, and help them find their way to the lord.

Neither Jesus nor God set out for any of their followers to pass judgement on others, or think of anyone as less of a person than another. Whether a homosexual, a leper, a bum, or a priest. Considering Jesus left only two laws when he died, and abolished the original 613 commandments, of which those now only apply to the Israelites who didn't believe Jesus was the son of god, I don't see where homosexuality is a Christian concern any longer. .

Jesus made it clear that everyone was to be loved, and ANYONE could gain entrance to heaven by simply taking him as their savior, and asking for forgiveness for their sins. This is my main objection to the organized efforts of today's Christianity. The simple message to love each other and get along has been lost within the confines of what's morally acceptable to one person versus another.
