The pilot should have shut down the plane for passengers to off load. Perhaps he did not want to do a "Hot Start", which is sometimes problematic depending on the plane.

I have compassion on the level that this girl just ruined a big part of her life, and it's tragic that such an incident occurred. However, that does not take away from the FACT that her own ignorance led to the situation she's in currently.
