You've said two different things.

Knowing the kid isn't armed is quite different than not knowing if the kid is armed.

Sebastian, if you are on the street and approached aggressively by someone, would you assume they are armed or not? Would you wager your own life to assume he is not armed? I think not.

There is a lot of talk here about whether or not Martin was armed. It does not matter if Zimmerman knew or didn't know if he was armed. His own gun came into play to prevent serious bodily harm when his head was getting bounced off the concrete by a person on top of him.
