I know one day I will be in the same shoes as you, Steve. My mom basically left me on my grandparents door step when I was 2. She is in my life, but I can't get a warm and fuzzy feeling about her. I see her a few times a year, and I will go to her funeral, but I just don't know how much I can really feel for someone as selfish and self destructive as she is.
