Never tried either of those brands but I also like shad and minnow patterns. Walmart used to carry a brand called magic minnows I think? And they were the best ones I've used but they stopped carrying them for some reason. Need to try and locate them on the net.
Very cool. I mostly fish with swim bait from Basspro, their brand. The minnows and shad work pretty well for me. I also kill it with a couple of my banjo minnows.

That's the portion of the river I frequent and have never had a problem. Like I said though we are always cautious and I am certainly not saying that doesn't/ hasn't happened.
It's definitely an excellent fishery if you know how to fish clear water. It's swimming pool clear and sight fishing for trophy fish is one of the biggest rushes I've had in my fishing experiences. We use mostly artificials, I personally like small swim baits in the less clear/deeper water. Once you get to the real clear stuff you need to simplify your tackle; light line, minimal plastics etc. You can see the fish and they can certainly see you so no big noisy crank baits with a million hooks attached. If you know how to cast net and can locate some baitfish I recommend you do, but don't count on that.

I'll ask him. I've heard to stay away from the lower part of the river that runs into the Amistad Basin but you never know when that's just a scare tactic. All the pictures I've seen make the Devils River look like a GREAT place for fishing. I enjoyed reading about your trip down there. It's something I'd like to do myself at some point.
What were you guys fishing with?

Damn hadn't heard that story, do you happen to remember which guide it is? We are always precautious on these trips, it's the Wild West out there, no signal, no radio no Police/EMS. Something happens there or on the Pecos you are truly on your own. Although it is quite close to the border I haven't seen any activity; the border patrol helos keep a fairly active presence and have done a low pass on us at the start of each trip.
Either way just figured out this morning that the Devils trip is off, both put ins are national parks... National parks are closed. Looks like we'll be hitting the llano instead

I had a buddy go down there with his brother several months back and they'd been given a tip from a guide to watch out for this group of 4 guys who've been robbing people on the river. They went down for a 5 day trip and noticed 4 guys following the first two days they were there. Third night, my buddies brother gets up to take a piss and hears talking off in the distance, comes back to camp to see 2 guys walking through their camp like their looking for something. He managed to get to his bag without them seeing them and he holsters his .45 where it can be seen and pulls out his shotgun to confront these guys. Walks up to them and racks the slide, asks them what they're doing in his camp. They made up some story about looking for their friend and he told them they're in the wrong camp. By this time his brother had woken up and gotten out of his tent with his pistol at his side to back his brother up. They headed out early that next morning and put some distance on the river.
Next Saturday sounds good. I could probably get a couple people to come along with us.

I'll have to make one of these trips on day. I'll actually be assistant guiding a 5 day 4 night trip on the Devil's River next week, should be a good time! If you guys ever get the chance to go I highly recomend it, it is one of the most pristine rivers out there. Rugged trip though...
I've heard both good and bad things about the Devils River.
