Oh this can be true. Jaded and blind. But some of these ftp posts I take as a learning lesson. See what they did and where they effed up. Being jaded or complacent will get me in their shoes. If any of that made sense.

As I said, and this may be hard for you to comprehend being on the other side of the badge, but many people comply with requests because they do not understand that it is a request, and not a command.

I will say that if you really pose the question that way, "do you mind", I will acknowledge that that is not really where my problem lies, but all to often that is not how the request is posed. It's the "I need to see your Id, ok?" or "ID please?" that I have a real problem with.

And maybe that is not even the officers intent, but out of habit or laziness, that is how it's delivered. And can be easily misunderstood.

It's my opinion that an officer should have to give a standard disclaimer when making a request as opposed to a command. "While you are not obligated to consent, will you allow me to search your car / see your ID / etc?". "To make it faster for me to complete this report, do you mind allowing me to use your ID / DL to speed this up?"

Keep things transparent and on the up and up.

Then again, cops can legally lie to or trick people during an interrogation, so I can see how some may see that kind of activity as acceptable.

We also positioned them just behind there vehicle, on the passenger side so they could watch. This practice seemed extremely fair so I continue this practice to this day. And this is how it should be. "If you give consent, we'll let you watch and you can end it at any time. You don't have to consent, you don't have to talk to us at all."

Back to the original video. At no time was he obligated to provide the officer with a physical form of ID. At most, all he needed to do was provide her with a verbal identification. Until people begin to stand up for their rights, this will continue to happen.

Wish there were more like you man... a good amount of officers seem to be on a power trip. I will always be respectful and cooperate with any officer but if they start off by being a dick it all goes out the window.

x2. I asked a lady one day simply because I was taking the driver and wanted to see if she had a good DL and could drive away the car so I didn't have to tow it. After I confirmed on her 15 warrants out of my city she asked me "So what if I would have said no when you asked?" I told her I would have told her to have a nice day and she was free to walk away. I just asked her if she had a good DL and if she would mind if I checked it, so she could take the car. No, hey give me your ID I am the fing police!
