Obsolete things that won't go away

I would venture to say that the majority of people that wear watches today do so as a fashion accessory and/or jewelry/status symbol, and rarely depend on them to tell time. We as a society are narcissistic, thus fashion and jewelry will never become obsolete.

I'm not talking about knockoffs or imitators, I'm talking about inexpensive functional watches.

I do agree that high end watches are really just jewelry. A $5k Rolex is no more functional than a $100 Timex. In fact, maybe even less functional. Not that there's anything wrong with it. I just don't know that I believe that 'most' watch wearers do so for vanity.

Young people, I'd say yes.. but us old farts (well some of us) wear them for their functionality.. My cell phone isn't my god...

A few off the top of my head:

Ash trays in cars.
wrist watch
TV antenna
CD's and disc of any kind.

The sound quality of mp3 hurts my head. I only listen to CDs and have zero mp3.

Same reason that there's lots of CZ and 10k gold out there, those who wear watches for fashion like to have a few options, and would rather have several cheaper watches in various styles and bands, than invest in a single "nice" watch.

I hope watches aren't a thing of the past... I love my Tag and have worn it everyday for almost 20 years. Still looks brand new. I had planned to hand it down to my son, but that might be like giving him a type writer or something in 30 years
