Your friend sounds like a retard, free rent in exchange for fixing the place up is the only way you should have to perform work at his place. Just be honest with him, tell him you would like to move in but refuse to live in the current conditions so options
    A. he fixes it and you move in paying the first months rent
    B. You fix it in exchange for free rent
    C. You don't move in, his dad sells the house and he becomes a homeless, subsequently turning to crack to console himself and the only pussy he ever gets again is from a notooth, white trash crack whore. Finally ending in his demise after getting run over by the DART while wondering down the tracks.

    Then let him choose

Haha, plus a work out to get to your pad! Or a deathtrap is your hammered! That's not the only reason I hate apartment living, but the main one I guess. Another one that pisses me off is the build quality that results in some retarded high electric bills. Suppose that is a case by case basis though.

You can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves. If it helps, tell him that equals no WoW and video games. See if that hits a hard spot.
Yea for sure, I did dumb it down like that for him. It's funny you mention that because my sister had a nice free couch that would be a huge upgrade to his. I told him about it and he was like, well I already have a couch. Then I put it in WoW terms that it's like upgraded gear, and then he wanted pics.

I like those options! I'm not sure why he is being so dull about this whole thing, I guess perhaps he is inexperienced in this realm. I mean, those really are the options though lol.

I had a similar experience a while back.

I had a buddy that took over his parent's old house when they got another one. They left it full of shit, like they just bought all new furnishings and such, and left all their junk behind. He wanted me to move in, and in exchange for cheap rent, help him clean it out and remodel it. So he wanted a few hundred bucks, use of my truck, and my hard work on the electrical, floors, and painting. The problem was the guy was lazy and was basically spoon fed by his parents, and didn't seem to do anything but play golf. He had all these wild dreams about the house, but wouldn't even clean out the garage. I started to help him do some updating, but it fizzled out. I am glad I never fully moved in because the guy was a total waste of space. They condition that house is in he could never rent the place out. It seemed him and his dad were simply trying to use me for my money and resourses to fix their shit hole.

If your friend is motivated and productive then it might be a good temporary situation. If he's not, then forget it.

I'm gonna be lazy and not read all of the above responses.

My $.02 don't do anything like this with family or friends. Normally it will ruin the relationship in one way or other.

Shit I think our friend's might be related! The garage has a shit ton of stuff in it too. I wonder if he doesn't want to trash anything because it's also his dad's stuff, but at the same time he's not coming back to get any of it.

Truly lazy, not like there is anything else to do today! I was tired of snow threads, so popped this one on here.

What do you mean don't do anything like this with family or friends? Like put myself in the situation to do the work and what not?

I really doubt that would happen. If it did there would be an accidental incident with my truck going through the room. New car and mess up what I did!

                    You didn't see that, Kim!

HAHA I am actually at work but hopefully for not much longer.

From what I understood you were going to be renting from a friend. That's a bad idea especially with his laziness about fixing any of it now. Any future problems are going to be your problems.

Like I said my $.02. I have been in this and many other scenarios. Especially with letting family and friends live with me at some point. It sucked.

Yeah they might be. Same shit different dumb ass. I would clean shit out and set it out for bulk trash and he would go through it and bring shit back in. I mean if they didn't want it then they wont miss it. I thought we needed to get the place ready for tenants and he was just junking it up more. It was a losing battle. I am a minimalist, and this douche was a serious pack rat.

We were carting shit that they didn't want to throw away to his parent's brand new house, filling up that garage, and they got pissed?!? The worst part was hours of planning and talking about the upgrades, then doing nothing but asking me for rent money. I washed my hands of the whole situation, some people are beyond logic.

Get your own crib, even if it's only 500sqft, just get what you want. That is the best advice I can give you.

Get out of there! I imagine the tickets were out of control...

Yes you're correct and I do see your point of view. If it's starting off like this then the future will be the same. The whole situation boggles my mind, I mean... what the hell is going through his mind?

Yea, my parent's hang on to things because they might need it in the future. It's not bad like the show hoarders, but still annoying. I guess seeing that I've grown to be the opposite. If I don't use something in 6 months or so, it usually ends up in the trash.

I am truly a minimalist, partly because I traveled for a living and moved alot. It was easier to move, the less shit I had.

It was like they were using the place for storage, yet they wanted to remodel the whole place. Not going to work.

My plan, based on your location and circle of friends, is to head to X's & O's and hunt up a cougar with a garage apartment you can trade sexual favors and yard work to for rent. Then stack them papers, and buy a house cash in a couple of years.
