Based on what usage? The OP said, "I mainly surf the web, pay bills, keep pics and music on my laptop." The old desktop I built will still do all of that just fine. It runs dual monitors, so you can stream movies or watch a downloaded one on iTunes on one and work on the other. You act like everyone has to have the most state of the art processor and other gear. For someone that is surfing the web, paying bills, and downloading pics and music, a well maintained old machine will work fine.Originally posted by Chopped54 View PostI have a Sony Vaio in my closet that I bought in '97. It will still power up and run fine. Doesn't make it any less of a turd.....

I guess antifan would be better?? Oh its apple so it sucks, oh it's android so it sucks, etc, same mindset as a fanboy, you are a fanboy of the "PC" so you blindly dislike Apple. I've used Win8 and I think it sucks, I have not used Win10 so I cannot comment, I don't just blindly hate Win10 because Win8 sucked, etc.Originally posted by Craizie View PostI'm not sure how liking PC over Apple makes him a fanboy. You guys are arguing for one specific brand being the end all be all. He's not picking a PC manufacturer and touting it as better.
Also, web surfing these days is very resource intense, junk hardware doesn't hack it (very well) with modern browsing.Interested in being a VIP member and donating to the site? Click here http://dfwmustangs.net/forums/payments.php

The PC companies and Apple are after two different markets. To me, Apple products are too dumbed down and expensive to want to buy. I can buy way better hardware and mod it to my liking with a pc / android. I like fact that I can just upgrade my video card to what ever I want instead of buying a whole new computer if your needs change.Originally posted by Mach1 View PostI guess antifan would be better?? The people who buy apple products dont care about any of that.
Win8 does suck, but with some modding it's not bad.

It bothers me that the common view is so closed off and is either anti this or anti that. I wish that some could open their mind and try and look down the middle. I consider myself pretty affluent with computers and I have more Apple devices than pc/linux/android. I have android, many linux devices, freebsd, Amazon Fire, ChromeOS, and the obvious Windows, and MacOS, hell I have a FireFox phone. I am not against any platform. If some of these ridiculous arguments were true about Apple and their products, I must truly be a fool to have so much Apple equipment.
But the comment that always flabbergasts me the most is Apple being dumbed down when in reality it is simply more efficient and streamlined for the user. The hilarity that spending more time configuring something to half ass work and touting it as being better is beyond me, and I am glad so. I also don't find it that expensive for the ease of maintenance and use that I get out from Apples environment in its totality. Sure, if you want to put all the bells and whistles on it, its very pricey, but so are many PC laptops when you do the same thing.
What I love about Apple that PC, Android, and Linux will never have is that its an entire platform/ecosystem. Microsoft is trying to get on the bandwagon, but has failed at every attempt for over a decade, they simple cant get it right. Windows 10 looks to be headed in the right direction though, i think its wonderful. At this time though, Apple in my opinion has it done right and has had it right for the last 4-5 years at the minimum. My items are sync'd seamlessly across many platforms without ever having to configure anything and its for my entire family which makes it priceless because I dont have to support shit. You can tell yourself that dropbox is just as good and have 'faith' that your incremental backup solution is perfect, your media library and interaction is above reproach and that your security is irrefutable but I've done it all and I've yet to find the triviality of normal use from using an Apple product on any other platform.
I'm also not blind, its not perfect, but the things I dont want to waste time on are all a joke to do and for that, Apple gets my vote. But if you're just browsing the web, get a netbook like the $200 HP one.

I work for HP but prefer Macbooks. That said, your use case doesn't justify the purchase of a Macbook. I recommend one of the following:
1. iPad with bluetooth keyboard case.
2. Microsoft Surface 3 (not the pro model) with detachable keyboard.
Those fit your use case and are excellent platforms.

Blake is also correct. Star Wars IS the movies, everything else is just something to take up your time.

Are you counting Thunderbolt ports as video outputs? Why not count the USB's as well? You have to buy adapters for any of them. If it's not a native video output like HDMI or DVI you shouldn't count it as a "real" output.Originally posted by Mach1 View PostAlright, go back in time, or hell, look today, I need a laptop that meets the following
Size/Weight at or under below
Height: 0.71 inch (1.8 cm)
Width: 12.35 inches (31.4 cm)
Depth: 8.62 inches (21.9 cm)
Weight: 3.48 pounds (1.58 kg)2
3 "real" Video outputs
2 USB3.0 outputs
13" 2560 by 1600 or better screen
PCIe SSD
10hr batt life
Backlight keyboard
Big trackpad
SD Card slot
Built in camera
Dual mics for kick ass call quality
$1400 or under.
Dell XPS or Asus Zenbook. I've been liking the Asus laptops better recently but Dell's are solid as well.

Well then, I guess I don't like star wars. The movies ( all of the thus far ) are terrible. I don't understand why they stick with the bad actor theme.Originally posted by racrguy View PostMy opinions mirror these.

You dont have to buy an adapter for thunderbolt output to a monitor and it is native video output, you can plug it right up to a displayPort monitor. USB cant do this and thunderbolt was based on displayPort.Originally posted by jimithing View PostAre you counting Thunderbolt ports as video outputs? Why not count the USB's as well?
