They will work fine for tires and smaller stuff but they can't keep up with sanders, grinders, and such.

Higher the scfm's the better, if the scfm's aren't listed it's too small. A dry compressor will be a little louder the a oil one.
      These are pretty descent.

What's your price range, I see them a lot on CL.

I use the 21 gallon compressor from Harbor Freight. You can usually find it for around $200 (or less with a coupon!) and it does everything I've ever needed it to do.

              Quit dating loose women.

For what you're needing the smaller pancake compressor should be fine. If you're looking to use air tools you'll need something bigger. Think of it this way, if there was a compressor available that would supply the CFM necessary to run all your tools, then why need a tank at all?

The tank is what stores the extra pressure that allows for the extended use. Tire pumps don't need the extra pressure, but they take forever to use though too. If you have room for a pancake compressor, perhaps there's an upright with similar diameter, but more capacity.

loose women have the most fun. So in my quest for a small compressor, what should i look for? If it can take off 4 tires and tighten them back on, ill be good.

If that's all you need, then a pancake will do it. You mentioned working in the garage occassionally, which would suggest air tools. The small compressor will handle an air wrench for a bolt/nut here and there, but for grinding and whatnot you'll need something bigger.

yeah, i just need enough power to tighten up some lug nuts and some nuts and bolts here and there whenever im feeling lazy.

For another 100 I would get the 20 gallon upright

Shop Sears for appliances, tools, clothing, mattresses & more. Great name brands like Kenmore, Craftsman Tools, Serta, Diehard and many others.

He has limited space so a 20 gallon upright probably won't work.

How much space you working with A+?

It's not that bad. It's a vertical compressor so the footprint is not much (if any) more than a pancake.

^^^ that's a pretty good deal, especially since it includes some accessories.
