I know its been discussed for the longest time but after reading a lot of threads i still cant decide. 1989 Mustang stock 302 with e303 cam, gt40ps, gt40p lower intake, cai,70mm throttle body and mass air meter, AOD trans, 3000 stall and want to know which would be best for my setup out of the gears. Stuck on 4.10s or 3.73s since i might spray later on and i dont know if it will run out of speed with the 4.10s. Will getting 3.90s allow me to run nos or not kill me on the highway as bad as 4.10s? This is used as a daily driver since im a student right now and sees about 50/50 highway and city time going from school to work and home. Also what kind of times may i see at the track with new gears? Running 10.2 in the 1/8th right now, 2.73s are KILLING me. Thanks for any suggestions!

I say split the difference and go 3.90's.
As posted above, all out performance/lowest ET possible is not condusive to best MPG. You need to figure out what is more important to you at the moment. MPG or ET?"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson, 1776

What's your top speed on the rev limiter in 3rd gear? Fuel economy is going to suck regardless and I'd imagine you aren't blowing the tires off and hitting the rev limiter in the 1/8, go with the taller gears. You could probably even go to a 4.56 with stock tires and not get anywhere near the rev limiter in 3rd.

If you're building a drag car, build a drag car.
If youre building a street car that is intended for daily use then go that route.
I would hate to have the thought in my head "it could have been quicker if I had got..."

Also keep in mind what your top speed is going to be in 3rd gear, with 4.10s you'd be buzzing it pretty good at 120. Obviously you won't be anywhere near that in the 1/4 with your current mods but throw a serious bottle at it with some good heads and you'd be at it. Gear swaps are cheap compared to the other mods though.
