Well the dust cover for the brushes was loose on the old starter and there was a dirt dobber nest inside and the brushes were slivers so its best that I went ahead and changed it.2004 TR Mustang Mach 1 RIP

Good Job, Had a "57 F100 with a 292.
Got hard to find parts but had lots of good luck with rebuilder shops. If I brought the old part in and then the "old guy" would fix my junk up.
There are lots of stuff stuck on shelves of older shops.
Don't give up. It's just a little more work.
Keep it going.

I have always found that a QUALITY rebuild from one of those "Old Timers" is always better than what you get from one of the low end auto parts stores. They always changed all parts and not just what was bad. My guy here in Temple calls it "Freshin it up".

how do you remove it? and I worked on cleaning/disassembling some of the interior and body pieces this weekend. I am waiting on a carb from a board memberOriginally posted by black2002ls View PostApparently that pin that holds the bendix in place is pretty easy to remove if you wanted to swap the bendix at all. Sorry I didn't make it over yesterday, I have been sick. Any luck getting it cranked?2004 TR Mustang Mach 1 RIP

Should be able to compress the end of the bendix toward the started and gain access to the pin. The pin should be relatively easy to push out. Apparently it has the potential to pinch the sgit out of your hand when you compress the springOriginally posted by LeahBest balls I've had in my mouth in a while.

too much work now at this point. The starter is back on the truck and I am too lazy to pull it off.Originally posted by black2002ls View PostShould be able to compress the end of the bendix toward the started and gain access to the pin. I figured that was coming! In the event it has to come out again. Did you get the electrical sorted out between the ignition and the starter?Originally posted by MGannaway View Posttoo much work now at this point. I found a spare solenoid but it was tits up. I haven't been back out in the storage building to find another. I am going to start tearing out the wiring in the cab because its all chewed up by rats. I'll be building a electrical buss bar system like in an aircraft. Keeps things much simpler. I also want to get another red top battery and run them in series to get some more cranking powerOriginally posted by black2002ls View PostI figured that was coming!
