He did a great job, but I'm not sure what's going on at 1st base. Moreland's back and doing well, so are they going to platoon 1st base now? You've got Olt, Moreland, Young, and Napoli all playing 1st base on any given day. As long as there's a good player on 1st, I don't really care, but just curious as to what they're thinking.Originally posted by Slowhand View PostMike Olt!

olt for the lefties and moreland for the righties. young can platoon the other infield spots and napoli will probably dh when he's not catching. they said the catchers are most likely on a 2 day rotation now.Originally posted by Vertnut View PostHe did a great job, but I'm not sure what's going on at 1st base. One of the issues I've had with Washington, is I think he over-plays the "righty/lefty" to the point where he'll pull a hot hitter for a guy slumping. I think there's too many guys at first, and you wind up with 4 "OK" guys instead of 2 that can really play the spot.Originally posted by jewozzy View Postolt for the lefties and moreland for the righties. young can platoon the other infield spots and napoli will probably dh when he's not catching. they said the catchers are most likely on a 2 day rotation now.

I think your reservations are totally warranted, but I also think it's working right now. Young is starting to look pretty good defensively at first base and his bat is coming around.Originally posted by Vertnut View PostHe did a great job, but I'm not sure what's going on at 1st base. All of this sounds fine to me.Originally posted by jewozzy View Postolt for the lefties and moreland for the righties. young can platoon the other infield spots and napoli will probably dh when he's not catching. they said the catchers are most likely on a 2 day rotation now.
I agree on Washington overplaying the right/lefty thing, but I don't think you'll see him pulling Moreland for Young; most likely he'd put Olt in if he continues hitting like this.Originally posted by Vertnut View PostOne of the issues I've had with Washington, is I think he over-plays the "righty/lefty" to the point where he'll pull a hot hitter for a guy slumping. Moreover, it gives the guys a lot of rest going down the stretch here. They can all DH on any given night even if they're not in the field. And at the end of the day, even if Moreland doesn't start, it works out perfectly that he can come in and face a righty late in the game and then you have your best defensive first baseman in for the last inning or three of the game.
There's certainly a risk to not letting people get into grooves and to having confusion and lack of confidence, but it seems to be working right now.

Dunno. They have good pitching and apparently brought up one of the top pitching prospects in the majors. They may hang around. They sure did need a lot of miracle wins to get where they are.Originally posted by The Geofster View PostI think Oakland is a flash in the pan. They'll be lousy again in a week.

Not disagreeing with you, but maybe he's figuring that out....or somebody is bringing preassure to bear. He is quoted from last night when asked about Murphy, "He's hot," Washington said. "I'm going to ride him. At some point you have to take advantage of what guys are doing when they're hot."Originally posted by Vertnut View PostOne of the issues I've had with Washington, is I think he over-plays the "righty/lefty" to the point where he'll pull a hot hitter for a guy slumping.
While that doesn't answer the first base question, it is nice to hear that he'll consider leaving a player that's hot the fuck alone.

Crazy! Just think - Angels were within a couple of outs of being within 2 games. In the blink of an eye - they're now 6.5 out. I don't mind if Oakland and LA keep trading places.Originally posted by mstng86 View PostAnd just like that, the rangers have the best record in the AL. I can't wait to see LA and Oak beat up on each other.
