Would you rather have Cliff Lee every 5th game or Beltre and Hamilton every game? He was a hired gun and everyone knew it. I'd much rather have someone like Matt Harrison for $500k a year than a Cliff Lee for $24,000,000 and be married to the guy for four more seasons. Even with his bad start in Detroit Harrison has a 2.34 ERA for June, take that one out and he's at 1.41 for the month. Yeah he's not 4-0 but the bullpen sucking and lack of offense aren't his fault.Originally posted by mustang_marc View PostSo how about Cliff Lee for June...
5-0, 4 shutouts, including 3 in a row and a 0.21 ERA.
Unfuggingbelievable!

That would've been cool if it were $100 million over 7 years, with only about half of it guaranteed! Players like Lee should be paid based on incentives. Get us to the series again and make another $5 million per win, win the Cy Young get another $5 million. Perfect game? $5 million bonus. There you go, $25 million a year in bonuses possible on top of a reasonable salary.Originally posted by Big Dad View PostCliff Lee wanted a 7 year deal here to sign .

Sure you can offer that, but why would Cliff Lee take it.Originally posted by BP View PostThat would've been cool if it were $100 million over 7 years, with only about half of it guaranteed! Baseball, along with Basketball, are going to have to get rid of guaranteed contracts. That might be the worst thing that ever happened to either sport.
They were talking about Jose Reyes looking for 140 million after this season. Really? 140 million dollars for a solid All Star player? Not a phenom, not a guaranteed hall of famer for the next 10 years. His best year has had 81 rbi's, and he has no power and may get you 25 doubles a year.

Well he won't have to move very far when the Yankees pick him up for that.Originally posted by mstng86 View PostThey were talking about Jose Reyes looking for 140 million after this season. The Yankees make the guaranteed contract parade worse. They keep raising the bar on pay and it is forcing others to pay up more. They are really screwing up the whole financial system.Originally posted by BP View PostWell he won't have to move very far when the Yankees pick him up for that.

Jose Reyes is a lead-off man - it's hard to rack up RBI when there isn't anyone on ahead of you. He finds ways to get on base and he's always a threat to steal. And he's probably the best shortstop that will be on the market. That's if the Mets don't get him signed before them. They've got a lot of money coming off the books after this year. I *think* the only bum contracts they'll have left are Jason Bay and Johan Santana. And with the buy-in last month they shouldn't have financial problems going forward. If you were going to rebuild the team, I would keep Reyes and get rid of David Wright(he hasn't been the same since he got clocked in the head last year).Originally posted by mstng86 View PostThey were talking about Jose Reyes looking for 140 million after this season. The Yank-mes problem lately has been paying players future money for past performance. A-rod, Posada, and Jeter - Jeter to a lesser extent, but still. They are all late 30's and are injury prone. They can't sign everybody and it doesn't always time out for them to pick up the best of the best. And sometimes, albeit a rarity, there are players that don't listen to the union and do go somewhere for less money.Originally posted by mstng86 View PostThe Yankees make the guaranteed contract parade worse. The club that really messed up the contracts was Washington signing Jason Werth. I understand overpaying somebody to get them in your uniform. The problem I saw with that was the 7 years. It seems that after that, everybody was asking for 7+ years(or at least that's how it has been portrayed in the media). I don't care who it is - I don't want to wager good money against the health of a ballplayer for that long..

Besides the pitching woes, Moreland is in a horrible slump right now, and I like him. A league-leading 72 errors, even for this team, is just sinful. 3 tonight: Andrus (duh!), Murphy, and Hamilton (which I did not see). Maybe after the All Star break they can get it back together.
