Even FDR didn't intend for SS to be the sole form of retirement income, just a supplement. Any body that ever relied on SS to be their only means of retirement income deserves to be put in government housing and eat the hockey puck meat substitutes.

This is not really how I think. Do they deserve to be in that situation? No. Is it my problem they failed to plan? No.

I just can't get over the fact that I am the guy who is the farthest away from this problem yet I am the one who is supposed to feel guilty and then gladly pay for it all.

You are correct, when it comes to politics and "social" causes where the government takes money from me forcefully, I don't care. I don't give a god damn about anyone but myself and my family. Why do people view the government stealing money by force to be on the same level as charity? If I want to be charitable, that should be my choice. There is nothing noble about taking money from someone in a supposedly free society, no matter the cause.

I can email and write people in Washington, sure. Do I? Hell no. I'm not stupid enough to believe I will ever get a dime from Social Security, I wrote that shit off as a loss a long time ago. I have said it a hundred times, I would gladly withdraw from the program today and they can keep whatever I have paid in, that would be a fantastic deal for me.

Should the people who depend on social security today have been writing their congressman forty years ago? It sounds like they should have been.

If Fidelity could "take off" with my 401k then they would never manage it.

I can appreciate the view that they "paid into it" their whole life. But the facts are that they did not pay into anything. The money they paid was spent by the people they elected. And they did nothing about it. Just like the money I pay in today is being spent. So, exactly who is to blame here? We can start with FDR. Then we can blame the government in general. Then we can blame the old people who did nothing to change the system forty years ago when politicians started raiding social security's surplus funding. We can also blame them right now, they have the most powerful lobby in Washington, the AARP, yet they won't do anything. Am I blame for their situation? No, I am not. Yet somehow I am the guy who is supposed to pay for it all because the government made a promise. Somehow it is ok to rob me using a ballot box instead of a gun. It is more acceptable to do it that way. How the hell does that make any sense to anyone with a brain?
Fact is, Paul Ryan came up with a plan that would change social security for anyone under the age of 40. It wouldn't affect anyone currently collecting benefits. It wouldn't change anything for anyone who would collect in the next 18 years. But he got laughed at and ignored. In fact, the Democrats used it as another chance to scare old people. Since no one wants to change anything and I'm expected to pay for it, I say fuck the old people. I'm getting real tired of caring.

since i've been old enough to pay taxes, i've seen it as nothing more than a cost of doing business. Never did i expect to get anything back. How can SS payed on income levels from 30-40 years ago be expected to create enough of "today's value" of money to even be worth while? Fuck everybody and their 401k's, you aren't allowed to bitch when you loose your kid's college money gambling in vegas......401k's are gambling your money in the market the exact same way. on a side note........bunch of motherfuckers in here that don't work it sounds like, if you have no arms and legs from serving this country that's perfectly understandable and i have no problem with my money taking care of Vets in need. debt limit will be raised IMO but there will be some very big changes in order to reduce the deficit. never should have gotten this bad but greed blinds people sometimes. if taxes get raised the rich will just pass it on to the less fortunate.
