Smith and Wesson M&P. I have a Glock & XD but after shooting a couple of M&P's I plan on getting one really soon.

    Glock,
My old gen 2 model 22 still shoots like the day I bought it! Thousands of rounds through it and you cant tell the barrel from a new one! (keep it clean------keep it clean!)

Paint is all worn off it and it looks like ass-----------has N E V E R FTB,FTF,FTE ever!

But I now carry CCW a S&W 442 .39+p. Small light as hell and easy to hide with plenty o fire power!

    My2c

Seriously, everybody has a different wrist angle as you "point and shoot" So some guns will feel more natural and easy to shoot. As stated above, go try various makes/models.

Go to a gun range and rent both the Glock and XD in 9mm. Shoot them both and pick the one that feels better. There are many other guns out there with lots of die hard fans. But the Glock and XD series are probably the most commonly used out there. You can't go wrong with your basic polymer gun. Many die hard 1911 fans will have a Glock or an XD. Same with H&K fans, Beretta fans, and so on. Even you yourself later become a Sig fan, you'll still like a Glock or XD.

I'll second the thoughts on try out a lot and buy what feels good and you can afford to practice with.

My first was a 1911 Rock Island in 9mm. I personally like the feel of the 1911s in my hand vs the glock, xd, etc.

Its all personal taste so treat it like hunting for a good woman. Figure out what you like and don't like then have fun with it

I just picked up a P226 Elite with a Short Reset Trigger, in stainless, with wood grips. It was a touch over $700, though.

Yes... the class I'm taking is 1/2 day at the range, and we get to shoot any gun in the store basically.

Just depends what you like, glocks are nice, xd's are nice. I have a few sigs that I like as well, but they all have their pros and cons.

    1911 > glock for me.

I like the XD more than the Glock for sure.

A 9mm will be cheaper to shoot (about 50% more for .45acp/.40 [$10/50 vs $15/50]).

Just picked up a xd9 service model this weekend for $399. I went looking for a Witness but couldn't find one under $450.
