Am I the only dude here that doesn't know about "conditions"?
I usually say loaded or unloaded.

A gun without a round in the chamber is the most dangerous device you could possibly put in your hand.

Chuck, you are the one espousing terrible BS advice here. The entire reason I said carry and leave your ammo home before you even replied is that I knew you were going down the "visual deterrence" route. It's a stupid path.
Why do people carry, Chuck? Because one day your life or the life of a loved one may depend on it. So, why then would you carry condition 2 or 3 or without ammo or use a visual deterrent and let the bad guy have an advantage on you? Do you think that a few seconds isn't an advantage to the bad guy? Why not just carry a cell phone and rely on 911 instead? Do seconds matter? Do minutes? Okay if they matter, then you carry Condition 1. If you aren't comfortable carrying condition 1, you do whatever it takes to get comfortable if you are going to carry. It's that simple.
When the stabbing or shooting starts, are you going to call time out to load your weapon or chamber a round? I'm not.
Go read any story about bad guy vs. good guy. The bad guy always has an advantage because he knows his intent. You don't. You have to react to his actions. If his intent is nefarious carrying is good, but carrying in other than condition 1 just gives the bad guy more time. I don't know about you, but I'm not one to give the bad guy more time when my life or my families may count on my actions.
If you think time doesn't matter maybe you and I can play with paintball guns someday. I start in condition one, you start in Condition 3. I bet after 3 or 4 shots in the nuts, you change your mind.

My issue was with "carry condition1 or don't carry". You're clearly not getting my point, and based on all that other bs you just wrote you're reading more into what I'm saying.Originally posted by AnthonyS View PostNo your advice is bad. "Visible Deterrent" that's why I sarcastically said may as well carry and leave your ammo at home. Yes, in most cases shots are never fired. What about the cases where shots are fired? How about a guy sticks a knife into your offhand and you are condition 3? How is that going to work out?
Please dispense with more "visible deterrent" stuff. The OCT guys are all about that..... working well for them? Maybe you just carry a picture of what is inside your gun safe! That'll scare them off.
Visible deterrent...... hey let's just rack a 12 gauge shotgun with no ammo in it! Then we can have audible deterrents too.
So when the SHTF is your aim to deter or stop the perp? Maybe you should sit down with her/him and ask him to use his words and express his feelings...... That's what Diane Feinstein wants you to do.
I'm going to carry this emoticon as my "visible deterrent." :ar15firing:
I'll be sure to keep a picture of my gun safe in my wallet and wear my Diane Feinstein shirt to scare off any would-be attackers.

There are many instances where a firearm is pulled and no shots were needed to protect someone. That's not going to happen 100% of the time, but I bet it's greater than 50/50.
Now, if someone took your advice, they wouldn't even have the visible deterrent of a firearm, and now have a 100% chance of being a victim.
I always recommend carrying condition 1, but would never tell someone to not bother carrying if using condition 2 or 3. Just bad advice.

Don't pull a gun unless you intend to use it, which means round in the chamber.

I've seen some goofy a$$ draws, too, that people rack the slide while drawing.Originally posted by wickedblkgt View PostWait, people carry without a round in the chamber????? That's like going to a swingers bar without your penis.
Was on another forum, and a guy there was saying his CHL instructor was telling people having a round in the chamber meant you carried with the intent to kill and the lawyers would use it against you. Like, WTH??

If you ever talk someone who is too scared to carry condition 1, suggest they carry with the hammer/striker back. But on an empty chamber. They can see for themselves that the trigger won't be pulled if using a proper holster.Originally posted by Chuck View PostPeople new to carry often carry in condition 2 or 3 until they become comfortable with condition 1. If they don't carry, they'll never become comfortable with condition 1. I'd never tell someone not to carry because they're not comfortable with a loaded chamber. Over time they will.

I don't know about you guys but when I've loaded snap caps in my gun, I've never racked the slide hard enough to cause it to fly out like ejecting brass after firing a live round. When I rack the slide, I usually have the ejection port angled upwards or slightly tilted to the right depending on how I grip the slide and I've always had it pop out and fall on the table almost directly below the gun. Maybe it's just me.Originally posted by Cobraman View PostI mean, I get it. The problem I have with snap caps is that you have to pick them up/ they sometimes end up over the firing line. You always have brass with you at the range and you don't have to worry about keeping track of it. Another benefit is that empty brass tends to give you a wider range of malfunctions like stovepipes, etc
Should have multi-quoted but it is too late now
